Measurement 1 - QSB1114

Measurement 1 - QSB1114

First of all it is totally not something that I expected. This is one of the hardest subject I have encounter. I can say I am more or less good with maths but measurement is completely different. The only chapter in maths that you can applied in measurement is area and volume.

For this semester, I manage to learn to read the floor plans drawn by the engineers and architect. I also now know how to do the measurement for all the elements in the strip foundation, pad footing, pile cap, column stump, roof beam, ground beam, etc.

Learning Outcome through the assignment
I was able to understand and visualize the theory taught in class. The site visit allowed me to have a hand on review and a clear understanding about construction work including being able to question and absorb the logic behind the machineries, construction techniques and methodology.
It is also essential to learn the importance of a tidy and organized working environment, as well as safety equipment.  This project helped me to identify the issues of urgent and importance, challenges face and strategies pursued by the construction engineer and the project manager which in return will help us to rethink our own conceptions of the reality.
It also assisted me in gaining knowledge for the preparation of their future. I was exposed to various construction methods at the site. ( Concrete work, formwork, brickwork, foundations, etc. I now possess the ability to differentiate the difference between types of foundation and the purpose of combining of foundation in the construction site, how the bar bending machine function and the function of  building materials.

Assignment 1 - Group Project
Base on the drawings provided, we had to prepare a complete taking off for the structural elements from the chosen building. Me and my buddy Osman were in charge of measuring the pile cap. We had to measure the excavation of pit to receive pile cap from reduce level, extra over pit to excavate rocks, concrete work , form work , reinforcement bars - links and loops. We also had to prepare the billing paper, query sheet, taking off list and the calculations in the dimension sheet.

Below are the photo examples which we been through :

The stack of trial and errors plus the completion of our work.

Left - Billing paper ( done at the end after all the calculation )
Right - Taking off list - for every measurement done, take off a section from the list.

Query sheet - List down things that are from assumption due to it not given in the plans.
Right = assumption plan of the loop in the pile caps since it is not given.

Measurement for the triangle Pile cap.
Excavation and Earthw

- Extra over pit for excavating rocks

Assignment 2 - Site Report Analysis

A site visit was organized by our lecturer, Miss Ang on 29th November 2013 to Symphony Hills. The location of the site visit was at Cyberjaya, Selangor. A total of approximately 45 students attended the site visit. My course mates and I took Taylors University bus to reach our destination for about 45 minutes. The agenda of the visit consist of in-depth explanation by the senior project manager and contractor on the operation of the project.

Throughout exploring the work progress of the site being built, we and the host exchanged question and answer to gain valuable information regarding the visit especially on the operation of the project. I was exposed to various construction methods which I was able to see real life formwork, types of foundation, brickworks, concrete works, etc; most of which were once just notes or picture shown visualize during the lecture.

This is the overall view of the combination of the raft foundation and the pad footing used at the site. The lead concrete at this area is 50 mm depth whereby the concrete spacer block is 25 mm depth.
-
The Spacer blocks are shown in the picture above. Having 25mm depth, they function as suspenders whereby it separates the foundation from the lead concrete and withstand the load of the foundation.

BRC offer a prefabricated solution tailored to suit individual needs. Whether it is to speed construction or solve skill shortages, BRC can provide the answer. For this picture, the BRC is used as a bar mat. Heavy bars are converted to mats for faster construction cycles.
